The New Mexico State University Department of Curriculum & Instruction is sponsoring a half-day workshop for secondary language arts teachers on Saturday, March 13.  Workshop sessions focus on innovative approaches to aspects of language arts--using theater of the oppressed, for example, and exploring global literature.  Workshop participants will receive a $75 stipend and be provided tasty treats for a mid-morning snack.  Registration is limited to 60, so sign up soon.  All secondary teachers in NM are eligible to attend.  Find out more here.

Is Mixing the New Plagiarism?

Literacies in the 21st century are saturated with rich cross-text pollination.  When does such intertextuality verge into plagiarism?  The question arose again recently with the release of a novel in Germany in which the author unapologetically acknowledges incorporating text from another novel.  Defending her practice as mixing, the author argues this is the shape of new literacies.  NCTE blogger Traci Gardner shares the story and her view here.
