The 2005 National Poetry Slam will be held in Albuquerque from Wednesday, August 10 through Saturday, August 13. Each year poets come together for this part festival, part convention, and part competition. Participants read at open mikes and themed readings and compete for the title of National Poetry Slam Champiom. Slam is the competitive art of performance poetry with a large dose of show and large dose of audience participation. This year, the day events will take place at the National Hispanic Cultural Center and the night competitions will take place at various venues in downtown ABQ, finally culminating in the National Slam Championship finals at the Kiva Auditorium. More and more English teachers are experimenting with "Slam" poety. Whether you're unfamiliar with the genre or an experienced enthusiast, consider taking this opportunity to see some of the best perform.
